MBRF receives Gold Seal from the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program

Recognition highlights the transparency and quality of the company’s greenhouse gas emissions inventory

MBRF, one of the world’s largest food companies, has been awarded the Gold Seal of the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program, the highest level of recognition granted to companies that meet the program’s transparency criteria for the preparation and disclosure of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventories.

The recognition marks the company’s first achievement following the merger between BRF and Marfrig in 2025, continuing the legacy of both companies, which had previously been awarded Gold Seals in earlier years.

Established in 2008 by FGVces and WRI, in partnership with Brazil’s Ministry of the Environment, CEBDS, WBCSD, and founding companies, the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program adapts the international methodology for GHG emissions accounting and management to the Brazilian context and maintains the Public Emissions Registry, a benchmark for corporate transparency. MBRF follows this methodology in preparing its greenhouse gas emissions inventories, which are independently verified by a third party on an annual basis.

Emissions Management

Monitoring GHG emissions is an integral part of MBRF’s climate strategy, which is guided by targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and aligned with the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. To advance this agenda, the company focuses its efforts on four priority areas: deforestation- and conversion-free supply chains, the promotion of low-carbon agriculture and livestock production, energy transition, and operational efficiency.

In its beef operations, the company was a pioneer in the Brazilian animal protein sector by committing to SBTi targets. The approved goals include a 68% reduction in direct emissions (Scopes 1 and 2) and a 33% reduction in the intensity of indirect emissions (Scope 3) by 2035, covering both operations and the entire value chain.

In its poultry and pork operations, targets were validated by the SBTi in December 2024, making the company the first food industry player in Brazil to receive approval under the FLAG (Forest, Land and Agriculture) methodology, which addresses emissions related to forests, agriculture, and land use. These commitments include a 51% reduction in direct emissions (Scopes 1 and 2) and a 35.7% reduction in indirect emissions (Scope 3) by 2032.

The progress achieved in 2025 reflects this strategy. The company reached 80% renewable electricity consumption across its global operations, with Brazil already achieving 100% renewable electricity usage.

MBRF also invested approximately R$23 million in energy efficiency projects, generating direct impacts through reduced electricity and thermal energy consumption, increased operational efficiency, and mitigation of emissions associated with its activities. As a result of these efforts, the company reduced total Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 12.5% compared to 2024, a performance that already reflects the consolidation of MBRF’s emissions inventory. In addition, forest fire prevention initiatives contributed to a 96% reduction in Land Use Change emissions compared to the previous year.
